Existing Bore and Backset
Most replacement handles must match the existing bore diameter and backset from the door edge. Measure before purchasing. A lockset that does not match the preparation may require drilling or may not cover old holes cleanly.
Latch and Strike Alignment
The latch should enter the strike without lifting or pushing the door. If the door has sagged, simply installing a new handle may not solve the problem. Hinge or jamb alignment should be corrected first when necessary. When the door or jamb is the cause, door repair should be scoped before replacing the handle.
Deadbolts and Exterior Hardware
Deadbolts need sufficient edge preparation and strike engagement. Exterior hardware should fit the door thickness and weather exposure. Smart locks can add power, alignment and connectivity requirements beyond a standard mechanical lock.
For connected locks and security devices, use smart home security and lock installation.
Finish and Reused Holes
New escutcheons may expose old paint lines or extra holes from previous hardware. Decide whether cosmetic patching is part of the job before hardware is removed. If a larger door-and-trim repaint is also planned, coordinate interior painting after filling old holes and before final hardware fitting.
