Choose Tile for Floor, Wall or Wet Zone
Not every tile format belongs in every location. Floor tile should suit the expected traffic and slip concerns. Wall tile can be lighter or more decorative. Shower-floor tile also needs to work with slope and drain geometry. The room should be divided into functional zones before the material is assigned.
For tile work outside the bathroom, tile installation covers the wider flooring and wall-tile service.
Substrate Flatness and Preparation
Large tiles show wall and floor irregularities more readily. Loose, damaged or unsuitable substrate should be corrected before setting material. The surface should support the installation rather than force thinset or grout to hide construction defects.
Layout, Cuts and Feature Alignment
Tile layout determines what people see at corners, niches, vanities and doorways. Centering a pattern blindly can create narrow cuts at a highly visible edge. The layout should consider focal walls, plumbing fixtures and the dimensions of the actual tile.
Waterproofing Behind Shower Tile
Tile and grout are finish layers. Direct-wet areas need bathroom waterproofing behind or integrated with the finish assembly. Niches, benches and penetrations require the same attention as broad flat walls.
Grout, Caulk and Movement Joints
Grout fills joints between tiles; flexible sealant is more appropriate at certain changes of plane and movement locations. Joint width and grout color also influence the visual grid, especially with contrasting material.
Large-Format Tile and Niche/Bench Details
Large-format tile can reduce joint count but demands flat surfaces and careful layout. Niches and benches introduce multiple edges and slopes that should be integrated into the pattern rather than treated as interruptions after the field tile is underway.
When an existing installation is damaged locally, tile repair may be more appropriate than replacing an entire bathroom surface.
Bathroom Tile FAQ
Can tile be installed over damaged wallboard? The substrate should be suitable, stable and prepared for the location before tile is installed.
Does grout make a shower waterproof? No. Waterproofing belongs to the underlying wet-area system.
Should layout be planned before cutting starts? Yes. Focal areas, edges and penetrations should be considered as a complete pattern.
