What Systems Need to Work Together
Start with the functions: lighting, climate, security, access, shades, audio/video or another system. Then identify which devices need to communicate with one another and which can remain independent. A clear goal is more useful than buying hardware first and hoping the pieces will integrate.

Lighting, Climate, Security and AV Integration
These systems can share scenes or automations, but each has its own hardware and safety requirements. A scene might coordinate lights and shades, while security or HVAC devices may require manufacturer-specific setup or qualified trade work. Broader rule-based control belongs closer to home automation.
Network, Low-Voltage and Power Requirements
Wireless devices still depend on reliable network coverage, and some hubs or cameras require wired connections. Powered devices need suitable outlets or circuits. For room-level fixture work, lighting installation remains distinct from automation setup.
NJ-GoodHome does not claim licensed electrical or low-voltage credentials without project-specific verification.
New-Construction Prewire vs Retrofit
Open framing allows cable paths and device locations to be considered before finishes. Retrofit work may depend on existing conduits, attic/basement access or wireless options. If new circuits or broader wiring changes are needed, electrical upgrades as part of remodeling is a separate qualification-sensitive scope.
Platform Compatibility and Future Expansion
Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, manufacturer apps and dedicated automation ecosystems do not all support the same devices or features. Confirm compatibility at the product level. Future expansion is easier when network, power and hub locations leave room for added devices.
When Licensed Low-Voltage/Electrical Work Is Required
Hardwired line-voltage changes, panel work and some low-voltage/security scopes may require qualified professionals. Call NJ-GoodHome at (223) 226-1828 with the property town, product models, current platform and whether the home is under construction or already finished.
