Existing Hole Spacing
New pulls are simplest when their center-to-center spacing matches the existing holes. A different size may require filling old holes and drilling new ones, which can be visible on stained or factory-finished doors. Measure a sample rather than assuming every drawer uses the same spacing.
Knobs, Pulls and Hinges
Knobs use one hole; pulls usually use two; concealed hinges have cup and plate geometry that must match the door and cabinet. Replacing hinges can change overlay and alignment, so the new hardware should be compatible rather than selected only for appearance.
Door and Drawer Alignment
Hardware replacement can expose underlying alignment problems. A pull will not correct a door that sags or a drawer front that is mounted crooked. Adjust the door or slide first when necessary, then position visible hardware from a consistent reference.
Drilling and Templates
A drilling jig helps repeat placement across many doors and drawers, but the reference edge must stay consistent. Protect finished fronts from tear-out and mark handed doors before they leave their original positions.
If the cabinets themselves need installation or structural repair, use kitchen cabinet installation rather than treating the project as a hardware swap.
