Identify What Is Structural and What Is Finish
Exterior trim, fascia boards and decorative pieces are different from posts, beams or framing that carry load. Before replacing wood, determine whether the member is cosmetic or part of the structure. Load-bearing damage may require broader construction evaluation.
Moisture and Wood Condition
Soft or split wood often points to water exposure. Check the roof edge, flashing, gutters, joints or ground contact that may have allowed moisture to remain. Replacing a board without addressing the source can repeat the damage.
Material and Profile Matching
Existing exterior details may use wood, engineered products or composite trim. Thickness, width and edge profile affect how a repair meets siding, masonry or other trim. Paintability and weather exposure should be considered when choosing replacement material.
Fasteners and Weather Exposure
Outdoor fasteners need to suit the material and exposure so staining or corrosion does not appear around the repair. End grain and joints should be finished appropriately for the material system.
For narrower fascia/trim work, exterior trim installation and repair may be the better fit.
