Occupancy Sensor vs Exterior Motion Detector
Indoor occupancy sensors usually replace or supplement a switch. Exterior motion detectors may be integrated with a light or mounted separately. The required field of view and weather exposure are different.
Coverage and Sensor Position
A sensor needs to see the area where motion should be detected without constantly triggering from unrelated traffic, HVAC movement or street activity. Corners, doors and mounting height can create blind spots.
Load and Wiring Compatibility
In-wall sensors must suit the controlled load and existing wiring. Some need a neutral conductor. New wiring or circuit changes remain qualified electrical work rather than part of simple device replacement.
Settings and False Triggers
Sensitivity, time delay and daylight thresholds should be adjusted for the actual location. A sensor that is too sensitive can be as frustrating as one that misses movement.
For exterior lighting as a complete project, outdoor lighting installation is the broader page.

Within a motion sensor installation request, electrical & lighting and light timer installation stay separate paths when either issue expands beyond this page’s scope.
