Existing Trim Profile
Measure width, thickness and any decorative shape that needs to continue through the repair. A stock casing that is close but not identical can be obvious where it meets original trim. Matching may require a larger replacement area when the old profile is unavailable.
Door and Window Casing
Casing follows the opening, so jamb depth, reveal and wall flatness matter. A shifted or damaged frame should not be hidden behind new trim without understanding why the opening is out of alignment.
Joints and Long Runs
Mitered corners, scarf joints and returns should meet cleanly before caulk or paint. The finish should refine a well-fitted joint rather than fill a large gap created by poor geometry.
Repair Before Refinish
Loose trim may simply need secure fastening; split or water-damaged pieces can require replacement. Nail holes and seams should be prepared according to the intended paint or stain finish.
