Confirm the Extent of Deterioration
Probe and visual inspection can show whether damage is limited to trim or extends into framing, sheathing or other hidden material. A small soft corner on a board is a different scope from rot that continues behind siding or below a window.
Find the Water Path
Roof edges, window/door flashing, failed caulk, gutters, ground contact and deck connections can all introduce moisture. The repair plan should identify the likely path before new wood closes the area again.
Repair, Dutchman or Replacement
Minor localized decay may allow a cut-out repair when sound material remains. Larger or structurally important members may need partial or full replacement. Cosmetic fillers are not a substitute for solid wood where the piece carries load or holds fasteners.
Material and Finish Matching
Replacement pieces should match thickness and profile so they tie into adjacent trim, siding or finish. Exterior-grade materials and compatible fasteners matter where the repair is exposed to weather.
If the work is limited to visible exterior trim, exterior trim installation and repair may be the narrower service.
