Shelf Length, Depth and Intended Load
A decorative shelf carrying a few frames is different from pantry shelving or a long book shelf. The expected load affects bracket spacing, fastener choice and whether the shelf material can span the distance without sagging.
Locate Structure Behind the Wall
Studs may determine practical bracket locations unless the system is designed for another substrate. Masonry, drywall and plaster require different fasteners. Do not assume the anchors included with a product are correct for every wall.
Level and Repeated Spacing
Multiple shelves should be laid out as a group so heights, vertical lines and clearances make sense together. Mark a reference line and verify the room before drilling every bracket from one first measurement.
Corners, Doors and Working Clearance
Check door swings, closet rods, cabinets and furniture below the shelves. Deep shelves can become head hazards in narrow passages even when the wall area appears empty.
For built-to-fit shelving or integrated bookcases, custom shelving and bookcase installation is the more appropriate page.
