Existing Pocket Door vs New Pocket
Repairing or replacing an existing pocket door may keep the current cavity and track. Creating a new pocket requires enough wall length and a cavity free of incompatible plumbing, wiring or structural framing.
Track, Hangers and Door Slab
The top track must be level so the door does not roll open or closed by itself. Hangers need even adjustment so the slab stays plumb and centered in the opening. The door thickness must fit the pocket frame and guides.
Wall Framing and Utilities
New pocket frames use split studs or specialized framing around the cavity. Load-bearing conditions and hidden utilities should be understood before walls are opened. This work can become a broader framing/remodeling task quickly.
Jambs, Stops and Finish Trim
Pocket-door jambs and casing should finish the opening without pinching the moving slab. Leave enough clearance for paint and normal movement, and confirm the latch or privacy hardware before final trim closes access.
For a surface-sliding alternative that does not require a wall cavity, barn door installation is a separate option.
