Interior vs Exterior Casing
Interior casing finishes the joint between wall and window jamb. Exterior trim has to shed water and integrate with siding, flashing or masonry. Identify which side of the opening needs work because material and sealing requirements differ.
Profile and Reveal Matching
Existing casing has a width, thickness and decorative profile. A replacement section should align with jamb reveals and adjacent trim. Photograph an undamaged corner when matching older material.
Water or Rot at the Opening
Soft exterior trim can indicate moisture behind the visible board. Do not treat new casing as the complete repair until the source and extent of damage are understood. Window frame repair may be the right page when damage reaches the frame.
Joints, Caulk and Finish
Casing corners should fit before caulk or paint. Exterior joints require compatible sealing and finish; interior work may need nail-hole filling and paint coordination.
Replacement Window Boundary
If the window unit itself is failing, move to window replacement instead of rebuilding trim around a unit that is being removed.
