Find the Leak Path
A draft can come from sash weatherstripping, frame joints or gaps around casing. Water may enter at exterior caulk, flashing or siding transitions. Identify the location and conditions before adding sealant everywhere around the opening.
Sash Weatherstripping and Operating Parts
Weather seals should allow the sash to open, close and lock without excessive force. Replacing a worn strip can help when the frame and sash are otherwise aligned; it will not correct a warped opening.
Exterior Perimeter Sealing
Exterior joints must shed water rather than trap it. Old failed caulk should be evaluated and prepared before new sealant is applied. Large gaps or deteriorated trim may require carpentry or frame repair first.
Interior Air Sealing and Trim
Gaps behind interior casing can contribute to drafts. Accessing them may involve removing trim, which should be planned if the casing is delicate or paint finish must be restored afterward.
If the frame itself is deteriorated, window frame repair owns that damage. If the full unit is failing, use window replacement.
