Masonry vs Prefabricated Chimney
Brick/masonry chimneys have mortar joints, crowns and flue components. Prefabricated systems use listed metal sections and caps. The repair method cannot be chosen until the construction type is known.
Crown, Cap and Flashing
Water often enters at a failed crown, missing cap or roof flashing. These components should be evaluated before repointing cosmetic mortar below them. Roof-interface work may cross into roofing scope.
Cracked Brick and Mortar Joints
Localized mortar deterioration may allow repointing when the masonry remains stable. Bulging, leaning or widespread cracking can indicate a structural issue that needs more than surface repair.
Flue and Combustion Safety Boundary
Inspection of flue liners, draft or combustion safety can require a qualified chimney specialist. NJ-GoodHome does not use masonry repair to imply that a chimney is safe for operation.
For general brick/stone work away from the chimney, use masonry services.
