Freestanding or Gate Arbor
A decorative freestanding arbor and an arbor that carries a gate have different stability needs. Gate weight adds side load to posts, so the hinge side and latch geometry should be considered before post locations are fixed.
Ground, Patio or Deck Mounting
Some kits are designed for ground-set posts; others use surface brackets on concrete or decking. The attachment method should match the manufacturer design and actual substrate. New footings or concrete are separate site work if they are not part of ordinary installation.
Square, Plumb and Level
Set the opening width first, then keep posts plumb while crosspieces and lattice are added. A small post error becomes obvious at the top beam and can prevent a gate from swinging correctly.
Plants and Long-Term Access
If climbing plants will cover the arbor, allow room for growth and future maintenance. Avoid locations where vines could interfere with gutters, siding or electrical equipment.
For a larger overhead shade structure, pergola assembly and installation is the more appropriate page.
