New Tile Starts Below the Tile
Backer/substrate flatness and waterproofing should be established before layout. Tile is not a substitute for a waterproof shower assembly. Existing leaks need source evaluation rather than a cosmetic overlay.
Layout, Cuts and Niches
Tile size affects joint layout and how cuts fall around corners, valves, niches and shelves. Establish reference lines so small slivers are not concentrated at visible edges. Large-format tile places more demand on wall flatness.
Repairing Individual Tiles
A cracked or loose tile can sometimes be replaced, but surrounding waterproofing should be protected. Matching an aged/discontinued tile may not be possible exactly.
