Opening Size and Door Swing
Measure the exterior opening at several points and confirm hinge side and swing direction. Out-of-square frames can make a new screen or storm door bind even when the nominal size appears correct.
Hinge Rail, Closer and Latch
Prefabricated screen doors often use a hinge rail that must be cut or positioned to the opening. The closer should control travel without slamming, and the latch should meet the strike without pulling the frame out of alignment.
Mesh, Frame and Panel Damage
A torn screen may only need mesh replacement when the frame remains square. Bent aluminum, broken corners or damaged door rails can make a complete panel replacement more practical.
Weather and Threshold Details
Some screen/storm doors include sweeps, drip caps or weather seals. These parts should meet the threshold and head correctly without creating drag.
