Decorative vs Functional Shutters
Decorative shutters mount beside the opening and primarily affect appearance. Functional shutters may require hinges, catches or hardware that allows them to close across the window. The mounting method should match the product’s intended use.
Siding, Masonry and Trim Substrate
Fastening through vinyl siding is different from mounting into wood trim, brick or stucco. The anchor should reach appropriate support without crushing or distorting surrounding material.
Size and Window Proportion
Decorative shutters should visually correspond to the window size, while functional shutters must actually cover the opening. Measure each opening rather than assuming all windows on the elevation match.
Removing Old Shutters
Old fasteners can leave holes or damage behind. Decide whether patching or touch-up is part of the replacement scope before new shutters cover the area.
For water-damaged window trim, window casing and trim installation and repair is more focused.
