Existing Coating and Wood Condition
A deck with peeling solid stain needs different preparation from bare weathered wood or a penetrating-oil finish. Check for rot, loose boards and structural repairs before spending time on cosmetic coating.
Cleaning and Drying
Dirt, mildew and failed coating can prevent new finish from bonding. Cleaning methods should suit the wood and existing finish, then the deck needs adequate drying before stain or sealer is applied.
Transparent, Semi-Transparent or Solid Finish
Transparent and semi-transparent products show more grain and existing color variation. Solid stains provide more color coverage but can peel when prep or moisture conditions are poor. Product choice should reflect the current surface, not only a color sample.
Rails, Stairs and End Grain
Vertical rails and horizontal decking weather differently. Stair treads, cut ends and high-traffic zones may absorb finish at different rates. Plan the sequence so wet finish does not trap the crew away from the exit.
If boards or framing need repair first, use deck repair.
