Portable Unit or Built-In Feature
A freestanding wood-burning or propane unit may mainly need a suitable noncombustible location and assembly. A masonry-style built-in feature can involve base preparation, block or stone layout and drainage. Gas-fed permanent systems introduce fuel-line work that is not assumed inside ordinary installation.
Clearance Around Heat
Look at distance from siding, fences, trees, overhangs, furniture and traffic paths. The manufacturer’s clearance instructions and local requirements matter. The surface below the unit also needs to tolerate heat and remain stable as people move around it.
Patio and Base Integration
A fire pit often becomes part of a larger patio layout. If pavers, concrete or masonry need to be built or modified, that is a separate hardscape scope. The patio construction and paver installation pages cover those broader surfaces.
For an assembled outdoor fireplace rather than an open pit, see fireplace assembly and installation.
