Existing Finish Determines Preparation
Bare wood, clear-coated wood, factory-painted surfaces and laminate/veneer do not accept coatings the same way. Cleaning, deglossing, sanding or primer selection should be based on the substrate rather than one universal preparation routine.
Paint vs Stain
Paint covers more of the wood appearance and can work where color change is the goal. Stain relies on absorbent wood and usually requires removal or reduction of an existing sealed finish. Veneers may limit how aggressively sanding can be done.
Hardware and Moving Parts
Doors, drawers and hardware are often removed or masked so finish does not bridge moving joints. Alignment issues or broken hardware should be separated from surface refinishing.
