Repair One Step or Rebuild the Sequence
A loose tread or cracked cap may be localized. Settlement, repeated cracks or inconsistent riser heights can require rebuilding more of the step assembly. Material—wood, concrete, masonry or prefab—changes the repair approach.
Landing and Door Relationship
The top step/landing should work with door swing and threshold height. Repairs should not create a trip edge or trap water against the doorway. Existing rail/hand support should be considered at the same time.
Handrail and Ramp Alternatives
A handrail can improve support without changing the step layout; see Handrail Installation. Where steps remain a fundamental barrier, Wheelchair Ramp Installation may be a different route.
Concrete/masonry step projects may also connect to primary Steps & Stoops.
